How Many Countries Are in Africa? 54 States — the Full List by Region

By · Updated 26 October 2026 · Guide · 6 minute read · Auf Deutsch lesen

Africa has 54 states that are members of the United Nations – more than any other continent. The African Union arrives at 55 because it counts Western Sahara; if you add the territories of European states such as Réunion, Mayotte or the Canary Islands, you land at around 60. Below is every country by region, exactly as it sits on our globe.

The number: 54, 55 or 57?

As with the question of how many countries there are in the world, the answer depends on who is counting. The three numbers you will meet:

NumberWho counts this wayWhat is added
54United NationsAll African states with UN membership. Latest member: South Sudan, 2011.
55African Union (AU)+ the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Western Sahara), a member since 1984 – the reason Morocco left the AU until 2017.
57Travel apps, including Love the World+ Western Sahara, Saint Helena and the British Indian Ocean Territory: areas with their own ISO code that are separate shapes on a map.
60+Geographic lists+ islands and exclaves of European states: Réunion, Mayotte (France), the Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla (Spain), Madeira (Portugal, geologically on the African plate).

For everyday use: 54 countries, 55 with Western Sahara. If you tick off countries on a map you will often see 57 shapes – because maps show territories, not memberships.

Every country in Africa by region

The grouping follows the UN Statistics Division (M49) and is the same as on our globe. The one difference: the UN lists South Sudan under Eastern Africa, our map under Middle Africa, where it lies geographically. Territories without UN membership are marked.

Northern Africa (6 states + Western Sahara (not a UN member))

Western Africa (16 states + Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (not a UN member))

Middle Africa (10 states)

Eastern Africa (17 states + British Indian Ocean Territory (not a UN member))

Southern Africa (5 states)

The edge cases

Africa in numbers

RecordCountryNote
Largest areaAlgeriaThe continent's largest country since Sudan split in 2011.
Most peopleNigeriaMore than 220 million people, the sixth most populous country in the world.
Smallest areaSeychelles115 islands, together smaller than Berlin. On the mainland: the Gambia.
Youngest stateSouth SudanIndependent since 9 July 2011, UN member since 14 July 2011.
Island states6Cabo Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles.
Landlocked states16More than on any other continent – from Mali to Lesotho, which is entirely surrounded by South Africa.

What counts as visited – and how to really "have" Africa

The rule is the same as everywhere: under the strict rule a country counts after a night's stay, under the middle rule once you have left the transit area, under the loose rule even on a layover – the three rules in detail. Africa adds a second question: whoever has seen Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt has three countries but a single region. The continent stretches from the Sahara to the Cape, and a beach holiday in Hurghada says as much about Kinshasa as Lisbon does about Helsinki.

That is why the title you unlock for Africa in Love the World is called "Africa Is Not a Country": five countries from at least three of the five regions above. On our globe each of the 57 shapes gets its own entry stamp in the passport – Western Sahara and Saint Helena included, because maps show territories, not memberships. See how the app works, or read the comparison of map apps (German) if you only want to count countries.

Sources and transparency: Memberships according to the list of UN member states; regions according to the UN Statistics Division (M49); AU members according to the African Union; status of Western Sahara according to the UN list of non-self-governing territories. The country list comes from the map data of our own app (Natural Earth, 236 territories). This text comes from the team behind Love the World; we earn nothing from any organisation named. Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in Africa (2026)?

54 states are members of the United Nations – more than on any other continent. The African Union counts 55 members because it admitted Western Sahara (the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic). On top come territories of European states such as Réunion, Mayotte and the Canary Islands.

Is Western Sahara a country?

Disputed. Morocco administers most of the territory; the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is a member of the African Union but not of the UN, which lists Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory. It has its own ISO code (EH), which is why most travel apps show it as a separate area.

What are the largest and smallest countries in Africa?

Algeria is the largest by area and Nigeria the most populous. The smallest is the Seychelles; on the mainland, the Gambia is the smallest country.

How many countries are in North Africa?

Six UN members: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia – plus disputed Western Sahara. UN statistics treat Northern Africa as its own region and the other 48 states as Sub-Saharan Africa.

Is Egypt in Africa or Asia?

Both: the Sinai Peninsula lies geographically in Asia, the rest of the country in Africa. Egypt is counted as African in every common list, and in our app.

How many African countries do you need for the title "Africa Is Not a Country"?

In Love the World, five countries from at least three African regions – so not just Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, but Kenya and South Africa too, for example.
